Kaliru Project

Project Kaliru, launched by the Tamil Nadu Government in 2015, aims to mitigate human-elephant conflicts (HEC) in regions like Coimbatore, where such encounters are frequent.

The project encompasses multiple phases, including establishing a helpline for immediate conflict reporting, engaging with farmers to develop effective mitigation strategies, and educating students about elephant behavior and conservation needs.

A significant component of Project Kaliru involves organizing awareness programs in schools, where students receive lessons on man-elephant conflict, elephant behavior, and the importance of wildlife conservation. These programs often include visits to elephant camps, providing students with firsthand experiences to foster a deeper understanding and respect for these majestic creatures.

The Nature Conservation Society (NCS) has been instrumental in the success of Project Kaliru. Collaborating with the Coimbatore Forest Division, NCS has facilitated educational sessions and field visits, reaching numerous students and community members. Their efforts have been pivotal in raising awareness about human-elephant conflicts and promoting harmonious coexistence between local communities and wildlife. Through these initiatives, NCS has significantly contributed to reducing incidents of conflict and enhancing conservation efforts in the region.
